Counting today, we have 50 days left in the year. 50 days folks! When you throw in the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the rest of the year is often a throwaway for most people when it comes to maintaining productive and healthy living goals.
There are the holiday parties and other events overflowing with tempting desserts and other tasty foods. Combine that with jam-packed schedules filled with travel, shopping excursions, holiday decorating and everything else, it becomes way easier to skip out on our healthy living goals. If we’re feeling ambitious, guilty or a combination of both, we might vow to get things back on track in the new year.
However when you think about it, 50 days is a long time. Research on goals and habits point to needing only 21 consecutive days to set a new habit. This means 50 days gives us time to work accomplish two new habits this year with a few days to spare.
Trust me, I know it’s asking for a lot, but let’s challenge ourselves to finish the year strong and go into 2017 already on track. For me, this looks like committing to the following three types of habits for the rest of the year:
- Diet: Drink 64 oz. of water daily. Why? It’s a no-frills way to kick-start my health. There are many benefits for upping your water intake including these 6 benefits listed on WebMD.
- Exercise: Run at least 3 times a week. Why? I signed up to run the Cowtown 10K on February 25th and don’t want to be the last person crossing the finish line.
- Something for me: Write at least 3 times a week. Why? Because writers write, just like runners run. Everyone says that the only way to get better at writing is to write more often. I’m pretty haphazard when it comes to blogging and writing and could use more discipline and consistency in this area.
To be successful at maintaining these habits for the next 50 days, I have to be all in. This is why I started off by identifying my whys.
Next, I need accountability. Like for real!! I’m sharing these habits here and plan to post updates on my progress on social media (#finishtheyearstrong). I’m also planning to use a habit tracker app. Right now, I’ve narrowed my search down to three apps: Productive, Today and Done. I looked at other apps but I’ve selected these based on the following criteria:
- No login required
- Easy on the eyes
- Easy to log activity with either swipes or taps
Finally, I’m planning to celebrate every week. Whether it’s going to the nail salon, buying a new book or watching my favorite show, I’m planning to do something every Saturday to celebrate my victories for the week.
I hope you’ll join me in finishing the year strong. What are some habits you’d like to maintain this year?
